Victims Lose HK$37m In Internet Dating Scams

NewsStandOnline.Net (27-July-2016): Victims of internet dating scams were swindled out of nearly HK$37 million in the first half of this year, local media reported, citing police data.

In one instance, HK$8.57 million was scammed from a single victim, the report said.

The Commissioner of Police, Stephen Lo Wai-chung, said the victims were mostly women, aged 25 to 73, with higher education background.

Con artists, who pretend to be educated professionals, usually ask the victims to transfer money after they develop a relationship with the victims, he said.

Speaking in a meeting of the Tsuen Wan District Council, Lo said there were 47 cases of internet dating scams in the first six months, up 1.5 times from a year earlier.

He also said the overall crime rates fell 13.2 percent during the same period.
