NewsStandOnline.Net (2-March-2017): A 13-year-old boy died after he jumped from a high-rise apartment building in Hong Kong late on Tuesday.

The teen, who has a history of emotional problems, threw himself from a window after being scolded by his mother for playing video games late into the night, Sing Tao Daily reports.   The incident took place at the Choi Fook Estate in Ngau Tau Kok, shocking the residents of the building and leaving the mother inconsolable.  The victim, surnamed Lau, was a secondary two student at a school in Tseung Kwan O.

According to the report, Lau moved into Choi Fook Estate about four months ago to live with his mother.  Prior to that, he had spent time at an orphanage and also shuttled between foster homes as his parents got divorced when he was just aged two.

On Tuesday, Lau took an extreme step after he was reprimanded by his mother for playing video games and not going to bed at the right time.  Angered at the scolding, the young boy climbed over a window and jumped from his 33rd floor flat.  He crashed onto a playground, suffering severe injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

According to his mother, Lau had been emotionally unstable, and had run away twice earlier without a word.  The boy also has a history of locking himself up in his room and issuing suicide threats.

Social workers had recommended for the boy medical attention from psychologists as well as regular check-ups.  Following Tuesday’s tragic incident, the Education Bureau offered condolences to the boy’s mother and also got in touch with the Tseung Kwan O school where Lau had been a pupil.  The school is said to be offering counseling services and support to its students.
