NewsStandOnline.Net (1-July-2015): Hong Kong’s chief executive has called for stronger ties with China at a ceremony to mark the 18th anniversary of the territory’s handover to the country from Britain.

Representatives from Beijing attended today’s event to raise the flags of China and Hong Kong.

Chief Executive Leung Chun-Ying said that under the idea of “one country, 2 systems,” Hong Kong can link mainland China and abroad.

He said Hong Kong, as a distributional and financial hub, will contribute to China’s initiative to create a huge economic zone encompassing both land and sea.

Leung criticized pro-democracy members of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council who last month voted down an electoral reform bill. He said Hong Kong has lost a key opportunity for developing democracy.

Hong Kong’s government planned to deploy several thousand police in anticipation of pro-democracy demonstrations later in the day.
