January 5, 2016

NewsStandOnline.Net (5-January-2016): With its Old & Rare Whisky auction on January 22, Bonhams Hong Kong will focus on bottlings from the 1960s to 1980s, with a mix of Scottish and Japanese whiskies, as well as American Bourbon.

Offerings from Scotland will include single cask bottlings from well-known distilleries such as Bowmore, Springbank, Glenfiddich, Macallan, Highland Park, Glenlivet and Ardbeg.

A bottle of Bowmore 1969-#6634 (est. HK$28,000 – 36,000, US$3,600 – 4,650), specially bottled for the 20th anniversary of the opening of Edoardo Giaccone’s whisky bar in Salo, Italy.

It is expected to attract strong bidding, as should the oldest single malt whisky offered in the sale, an early 20th-century Highland Park 1902 by Berry Bros & Rudd (est. HK$58,000 – 68,000).

The sale will include Japanese whiskies, which have been in increasing demand in recent years, including a bottle of Karuizawa 1960 50-year-old #3604 making a debut on the auction market (est. HK$150,000 – 200,000), plus more than 30 distinctive bottles of Yamazaki single cask and a selection of coveted Hanyu Ichiro’s Card series bottles.

American bourbon has enjoyed a renaissance of late thanks in part to TV like dramas Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, and Bonhams will also offer a range of the finest from the 1970s and 1980s from brands such as Heaven Hill, Old Fitzgerald, Old Weller, and Pappy Van Winkle’s.
